One night in Sanya, we went to a bar named Fat Daddy’s near the beach. The owner was an American middle aged man. He welcomed us in surprisingly fluent Chinese. He said he’s been traveled a lot in China and decided to settle in this beautiful place to set up a bar. Knowing that we were all from an auditing firm, he pretended to be scared and left the conversation.
A few minutes later, a black man like Morgan Freeman came over. He introduced himself that he was used to be a CEO of a company but retired and he has been an auditor in Arthur Anderson for ten years. That’s why he believed he had something in common with us. We bought him a glass of beer and he started to tell his story.
“I haven’t got married,” He began his speech with a statement. He left A&A as a SM after an audit career for ten years. Then he got a MBA and served as a controller in a company. He strongly emphasized the importance of the planning of career path because that’s actually what he did for the past 20 years. He spent 5 years to learn the management of production, 5 years for the sales, 5 years for the financial management and another 5 years for tax, and then he became the CEO of one company. And now he retired and needed to worry nothing but to enjoy the life.
“You need to fight for three things in your early career: qualification, experiences and relationships.” He further delivered. Among these three, he placed qualification the top priority. He got AICPA when he finished bachelor study and continue to study tax. He said studying tax is essential to his career because on one hand, he could make money by providing advices on tax service for people, and on the other hand, he could save lots of money. He boasted that he had never paid any tax to the US government because he could always find all kinds of tax deduction for himself and his family. In his eye, not all things needed to pay, like the beer he’s drinking that night. He didn’t need to pay for it.
His ended his speech with a smile while we sat still and were silent for a few moments. He said thank you for our treat leaving us lost in thought.
When we left Sanya the other day, we saw him wondering around the Fat Daddy’s. He said goodbye to us with a trademark-like smile, maybe was waiting for other strangers to share his story.
